This traditional ornament is from origin a hair pin worn by Nepali woman. The shape and meaning of Chandrama is crescent moon. The concept of wearing Chandrama may be derived from the crescent moon on the head of lord Shiva. The moon is first the light of the night in the sky. It illuminated the earth on full moon nights and plunges it into the mystery of darkness untill the new moon. This phenomenon of constant emergence, growth and disappearance of the moon symbolizes life, death and rebirth.
